Can I Fix a Grinding or Not Moving Sliding Glass Door Without Taking It Down?

Grinding or refusing to open is one of the common problems that a sliding glass door suffers from, especially if some kids or pets go in and out of the door constantly. Sometimes, this problem knocks on the door when there is a lot of dirt and other elements accumulated around the tracks and rollers. These things interrupt the movement of the door, causing irritating noise.

As this is a common problem, people often avoid taking any external help. They try DIY tricks by watching or reading guides on the internet. But, the thing is every guide starts the repair process with “remove the door”. And you very well know that removing a sliding glass door isn’t easy. Sometimes, it’s risky too.

To keep the risk away, we will discuss the steps to repair a grinding or not moving sliding glass door without taking it down in this blog post.

Start with inspecting the railing or tracks

If your sliding glass door is running on tracks or railing, chances are very high that it has jumped off its rails. So, you should first inspect the railing. You should check if the door is correctly laying on the tracks. For this, you should inspect and check the alignment of both sides of the door.

If you find a deviation in the alignment, you can easily fix it by lifting the sliding glass door slightly and putting it back into place. You should push the door far enough that both sides are easy to grab, then gently lift and maneuver them back to place.

The next thing to do is check for dirt and debris on the tracks

If the door is on the track, the problem can be due to dirt and debris on the tracks. Sliding glass doors easily attract dirt and debris because they are on the floor. Dirt enters the tracks from outside or actions of the people and animals using the door. So, your next step should be to inspect the tracks and clean them in and around.

To clean the track, you should use a small brush and dislodge the dirt and debris. Then, you should use a vacuum cleaner to clean it all off. While cleaning the track, you should move the door around to reach every corner.

Cleaning isn’t enough. You should lubricate the door by spraying a silicone lubricant.

The last step is to adjust the wheel height

If the above-mentioned problems are not found, you should check if the wheels are uneven. The unevenness of the wheels restricts the sliding glass door from opening or closing. If you find the wheels are uneven, you can easily fix them.

For this, you should look at the base of your door for holes or circular plugs. You will find adjustment screws behind the circular rubber to adjust the height of the wheels. Using a screwdriver, you should adjust the wheels up or down. You should move the screw clockwise or anticlockwise, whichever works for your door.

Conclusion

If the problem persists even after trying all the above, you should contact professionals for sliding glass door repair as this can be a sign of a bigger problem. You should no more try to repair the door yourself.
